Water at Night

I am amazed at the ability of water to be a 3 dimensional medium. My experience out on Whiskeytown Lake at night in an old canoe was transcendental. The stars were above and below. We were floating surrounded on all sides by stars, we were floating through them. The depth of reflection is unlike anything technology can accomplish. I don’t understand the mechanism but know it is utterly taken for granted by the human eye. We expect water to be this audacious and so we go no further than to notice intricate reflections, duplicates of the sky and mountains. And mirrors, forget mirrors, this is better. Mirrors do not have the depth of reflection that is found in still , dark, clear water. So, look again. Look again and reach in to the stars. When you reach into them the universe pours out between your fingers.
